Throughout the semester, I have done a lot of thing in College 1. I have made numerous amount of RRJ’s and Switch Double Entry Journal. I have also made a number of free writes and attended events like the Southland/Switch speaker events. There are a few themes from the book that directly apply to my life as a first year college student. One them that directly apply to my life is to appreciate the value of your family, as a first year college student, this is the first time that I lived far away from my family. After reading the story of Frank and Jackie on how Jackie never know and appreciate everything that Frank did for him, the theme of appreciating your family really comes to mind. I learned that I need to appreciate my family before its too late like Jackie was too late in finding out all the good deeds that Frank had done for her. I have to appreciate my parents in general because of their hard work, I am able to study abroad and get the best education compared to them.
After doing numerous amount of RRJ's over the semester, the process of doing these RRJ have changed my reading process tremendously. i have grown so much because of the RRJ's mostly because now i have a different purpose when reading. My reading process changed when reading Southland. For example, RRJ 1 and 2 i have always added so much details on the summary. gradually, i learned that this is not the best solution and i need to summarize only the key points. so as i read the following chapters, i only try and make key annotations like underlining the key points. as i look back my RRJ's on the reading process section, i can see an definite change. before, i was always writing that i procrastinate when reading and i often lose focus. but compared to RRJ 10 and 11, i have changed my reading process unconsciously by writing that i now annotate and take the key ideas of the chapters to help me remember. Lastly, my reading process changed throughout the semester because of the Response section on the RRJ's. as i read, i process my thoughts when reading and i often say "oh man Jackie is such a spoiled person, and selfish". so i started to question the readings and make comments as i read to help me prepare for the response section. as it turns out, this method has changed my reading process and help me understand the readings in greater depth. My critical reading skills have changed over the course because now I can annotate my source. Back in Indonesia, I have never been taught annotation and now I can annotate my source and give a brief summary. So in my opinion, this experience of annotating my source and making an annotating bibliography is really valuable. to further explain, annotating bibliography really helped me in determining which source to use and the content of it. often times, i just picked a random source without reading the full content. after learning how to annotate my bibliography, i learned that not all source from the internet can be trusted. Like, a source does not have to be scholarly article but it defitely has to come from a popular source. if it is just one persons opinion from a blog this might not be suitable source to use. also because of annotated bibliography, now i know that not all source have suitable content for my topic. a source can be reliable but the content itself does not match to what i am trying to talk about. so i am more cautious and careful due to learning how to annotate bibliography.
