Harlem Night Activity
Prompt:
- How well did you do?
- Did any of your quick assumptions reinforce Bolman and Deal's assertions about people's common tendency to 'fill in' informational gaps as shorthand ways of interpreting events and deciding their meaning?
- Was the activity a valid way to test your possible propensity to make rash assumptions? Why or why not?
Response:
To begin with, I did such a poor job with the Harlem Night activity presented in lecture three. I feel like part of this reason was because of my constant strong upbringing in specific international culture. I don't really want to admit it, but i have to agree that all of my quick assumptions reinforce Bolman and Deal's assertions about people's common tendency to "fill in" informational gaps to interpret certain events and meanings. Although i would not reveal my answer, but the fact that i associate everything with my stereotype and cultural nuances signify my constant ties with my culture. To evaluate the activity, i believe that this is a valid way to a certain degree to test possible propensity to make rash assumptions. In a way, this is true when you are answering the questions without much thought. However when thinking critically about the questions and analytically criticizing it, O believe this is not a good way to test possible propensity. Because everyone who had enough time and thinks critically would eventually not all the answers are unknown. So there is an evident flaw in this exercise. However i have to admire the fact that i am able to think more clearly about stereotypes and also certain cultural influences in my life.
